On July 6th, 2009, my mom drove me to Oakwood Memorial to visit the grave of my beloved Nonna. On the way there, we passed Santa Susanna Pass, the street that leads into the canyon that Spahn Ranch used to be on before it burned down. She suddenly made a sharp right, and drove up the street. When we turned around and headed back the way we came, she told me to look down into the canyon. I did, and I didn't see anything. "Mom, what am I supposed to be looking for?" "See the holes in the rock wall of the canyon?" "Yeah. A person could fit in there." "Try about 15 people. That's one of the hangout places of the Manson family while Spahn Ranch was around. Those were places that he preached to the family. That's also one of the places where he planned the murders." "Oh. Okay, this is creepy." "I know, isn't it? I thought you might like to see the land where some of the orchestrating occured." "Yeah. It's cool." I was halfway through Helter Skelter, and I was fascinated by the landmarks. We have many more places to go before we see all the places mentioned in the book, and I'm excitedly anticipating our next journey.
